I Asked my 9 year old cousin Emma if she wanted to be on the phone with me when she watched DW tonight. She’s only allowed to stay up late when DW is on – it’s on an hour later here in Denmark, timezones yo. (she has watched all episodes in the past year and I…

When did the Doctor make fun of Clara’s weight?

Pretty much constantly since the Capaldi era started?  He comments on her hips, he comments on how she’s given up, he asks if she should be wearing certain things…I don’t have access to quotes right now, but it’s been in there.

It’s funny, because I actually love Capaldi as the doctor. I love that he’s harsh and not lovely, that he’s abrasive and rude. I like that because the Doctor has not always been a fun, kind, friendly person; and seeing it come back is good. It’s good to have change in the Doctor, and I’ve missed that side of his character.

It’s just the way it’s been done is fucking awful. Even through the Moffat era, up until now I’ve still felt excited about Saturday night being ‘Who night’. There’ve been enough good bits or good episodes, and perhaps enough of a history that I’ve coped. It’s been one of the very few bits of live TV I’ve actually bothered to watch, live, for the last few years.

This season though, I’ve been steeling myself to watch it; to see what new ignominious low they’re going to put my precious doctor through. And I’m really struggling to get up the energy to try and watch the latest episode, because they’ve all been so very, very bad.

  • They obviously train medical staff here on sarcasm.

    theaminorjourney:

My dearest friend, @Pyoor, happens to work in the same hospital as I am in. We’ve joked for the past few days that the medical and clinical staff have a predilection for sarcasm.

So, after being told that 1) I can’t drive yet and 2) I may not go home yet, my wonderful cardiologist told me, with a glint in his eye, that you will be pushed hard in my stress test.

I’m done with this hospital thing. Please send me home.

As I explained yesterday, basic sarcasm is part of the induction programme. Of course, a natural predisposition to sarcasm is vital to work in the NHS.

Bear in mind, my induction programme opened with a photograph of the hospital and the phrase “Welcome to East Germany”

But her response broke my heart:

“no he’s making fun of Clara. She’s not fat, mom says. He’s not nice. I don’t like it anymore.”

Her mom then told me Emma had asked her if ‘she was big and had big hips? and if the doctor wouldn’t like her either?’

Her mom said “but the doctor loves Clara!”

she then simply responded “no, that’s not how you treat friends. I would be told off in school if I did that.”

and that’s basically all  have to say. My almost 9 year old’s biggest hero has made her feel fat. Please, Moffat, can’t you write one single episode without making sexist jokes. Please. Please.

Quitting Doctor Who was the best decision

There’s really nothing I can add to that. He’s destroyed it.

The only good thing about moffat is that once, in talking about him, I uttered the phrase ‘misogynistic dinosaur’ whilst passing a small child, who then demanded her father explain what it meant to her.

In January, Sam Pepper uploaded a video called “How To Get A Girlfriend Easy” in which he sneaks up behind or beside unsuspecting women on the street and handcuffs them to himself. He then tells them they’re “his girlfriend now.”

When one victim reacts furiously, saying “No! I don’t know you! Take it off!” and demands that he remove the handcuffs, he refuses and replies with “We’re dating now.” She tries again, “Look, I don’t know where you’re from, but we don’t do this in America. Take this off,” while fighting with the cuffs. He refuses again, insisting they’re “going on a date.” She then tells him that she’s married, to which he says “No, you’re married to me now,” and refuses yet again to remove the handcuffs.

At the end of the video, another woman is pleading with him to undo the handcuffs, and he refuses to until she kisses him on the lips. Pepper appears to think the entire scenario is hilarious at best and endearingly misguided at worst, while the women being “pranked” are visibly livid, terrified, and profoundly uncomfortable.

NONE OF THESE THINGS ARE PRANKS.

We need to stop calling assault by white men on men of color and women of all races “pranks,” because it makes them seem lighthearted and fun, not like the violent criminal acts they are.

I wish he did that to me. I’ll finally have a reason to cause major bodily harm to a dick who deserves it.

Someone does that to me – Someone ends up with a broken arm and probably testing just how close to ‘in traffic’ they can be while they continue to exist.

  • How green does your garden grow?

So, another couple of afternoons of work in the garden. Well, part of an afternoon, I’ve made a little more progress. I spent most of Wednesday afternoon burning stuff. We had vast piles of cut-back brambles and cut-back and pulled lyme tree chunks which we could have put in the car and taken to the tip, but it’d’ve taken several trips and got the car full of both bugs and dirt.

Instead it all went through the incinerator in an afternoon filled with incineration. The garden looked much better because of it, and it meant that I could get back to the strip of rocks/gravel that is meant to live between the garage and the grass and pull out all the ‘nice’ bits of stone (quarried from Bristol in the 18th Ct, and taken out of an old wall that was being pulled down). I’d hoped I’d have enough ‘nice’ stone to dress the whole top edge of it:

    Untitled

Sadly I’ve now run out. That said I’m not 100% convinced I like the final look. I’m wondering if gravel would be better. Also I’m a bit short on hardcore to go underneath it, ‘cos I’ll probably want to retrieve some of the bricks I’ve got at the end that I’ve not done yet to use as path edging. On the plus side I did get to meet 3 cute little froggies who are living in there. Which does kinda incline me to keep the rock effect, I like them having somewhere to live.

Yesterday I did a bit more work on the path – creeping us forward another 4 or so feet. I also spent some time hoe-ing a bed and then threw cardboard and mulch material over it; which has proven to be an adequate, if not ideal technique for keeping weeds at bay.

And here’s a moment of what we’re going for:

Given the weather I think I should probably get on with more serious stuff, like the fact that a chunk of render’s fallen off our outbuilding, that the paint’s flaking off the wall underneath where we had the boiler removed (so there’s no render on that bit) and there’s a bit of wood trim that’s gone rotten.

Something for me to look forward to, anyhow.

sometimes tumblr’s US-centric social justice makes me so fucking frustrated. Right now sweden’s third biggest party are literally neo-nazis and our elections couldn’t even get onto trending tags today, goddamit.

Okay, so the post is gaining notes and people are confused, so to explain what the hell is going on:

    image

Swedish elections held were on last Sunday, 14th September. We’ve had a right-leaning government the past eight years and after this there will be a change of power. The new party, Socialdemocrats (S) gained a total of 31% percent. The old party, Moderaterna (M) gained 21%.

Sverigedemokraterna (SD) gained a total of 12.9%. Their policy is racist, Islamophobic, anti-immigration, anti-refugee, anti-diversity, anti-LGBT+, and anti-feminist. Basically, they tick every box on the douchebag lottery.

If you’re here to argue that they’re ~not actually~ Nazis: 1) Fuck you. 2) Fuck the horse the you rode in on. 3) I hope you get stepped on by a moose, you ignorant asswipe.

    1.  they literally started as neo nazis. They have used a Neo-Nazi movement as campaign slogans,
    2. party members have assaulted immigrants with iron pipes (tw for racialised violence),
    3. worn Nazi symbols
    4. supported and helped build Neo-Nazi group SvP.

There’s probably more, but I don’t have links on hand.

They’ve been having rallies and demonstrations all over Sweden, and people have shown up just to turn their back on them and protest (this post explains it better).

In the 2010 elections, SD were pretty much considered no better than neo-Nazis and only got 5.7% votes – it put them in 6th place and was just enough to get them into parliament. In the elections before that, they got about 2.9%. In the past four years, they’ve grown exponentially in Sweden.

They’ve also run extremely extensive PR campaigns, appealing to the youth, kicking out members “exposed” of being racist, (note: these members often end up in SvP) and picking up buzzwords from the Socialdemocrats’ ideology.

29% of votes they gained this year were from swing voters who previously voted M,  and the biggest gain have been in the south, in small towns and the countryside:

    image

This is not something that’s just going on in Sweden. Europe has seen an influx of extreme-right parties over the last decade or so, often thinly disguised as a party that puts ‘traditional values’ and ‘national interest’ first.

In Greece and Hungary they’ve already been in power. In Germany, Netherlands, Italy, Greece, Finland France and UK, extreme-right-wing parties have been voted into the EU.

Because here’s the thing: we’ve forgotten what it looks like. We’ve gotten to the point where we’ve turned Nazism into a cartoonish lampoon of goose-stepping, uniforms and moral lessons that “we’ll never be like them~”, ignoring the fact nationalism is not as cut-and-dry two ends of an extreme but exists on a scale.

People have been apologising for SD’s actions for a while now because they’re not considered “extremist enough” to be neo-Nazis, because they don’t share the same beliefs, because they’ve “publicly denounced” SvP.

But the same people still get hurt. Still SD has the institutional and systematic power and privilege to oppress, degrade and humiliate people of colour, which they already have done. Stop making excuses for them. Stop making leeways for right-wing-extremists because that is how they gain tract.

    Please spread this.

PLEASE reblog this, this is the tip of an iceberg of terrifying neo-nazi activity in Sweden and Europe. There is so much to tell. (If I have time, I’ll try to put together a timeline of events in sweden) We always do our best to bring the events in the US to light here, now we need help bringing this development into the spotlight.

I’d also like to add that people of colour are not the only group targeted by the fascist, neo-nazi groups active in europe, but LGBTQIA+ people, religious minorities and women (esp feminists) are at risk.

Neo-Nazis are fucking terrifying, no matter where they are in the world. Like, this is really really scary to me, because this is the trend in word politics lately. Extreme right-wing, racist, Islamophobic, anti-immigration, anti-refugee, anti-diversity, anti-LGBT+, and anti-feminist (as quoted from above.) As a woman, religious minority, feminist, member of the LGBT community, there is nothing about this that does not scare the utter shit out of me.

A lot of people seem to think that to be ‘actual nazis’ they need to be committing acts of mass genocide or forcing vast numbers of people to leave the country by creating a spirit of hatred in the majority population and of fear in the minority. The distinction seems to be in the volume of god-awfulness as opposed to the presence and encouragement of god-awfulness.

These people seem to neglect that all of this comes later, after the insidious and pernicious placing of these attitudes in the general populace. You can’t just start off killing people; first you need to get the majority to either hate them or at least look away.

  • Gardening glut

So this weekend has been a proper weekend with relaxing and doing gardening and enjoying the world. As I was chatting to my neighbour I was discussing the fact that we’re approaching the next period of time when I actually have to do some maintenance on the house, which’ll be not nearly so much fun.

But for the moment, I’ve been out there gardening and starting to prep the garden for autumn and winter.

The vertical garden we just let do its own thing. Every so often we throw more soil and compost in the top because we didn’t know how to build it when we made it, and now have various problems with the soil leaking out. Apart from that we periodically chuck new plants into it to see what does well, usually by a process of the previous plant dying. Thyme and the big leafy plant who’s name is totally escaping me but is delicious and lemony Sorrel. with fish, incidentally.
