Having a plan
So, I’m aware that I’m complaining about something I shouldn’t be complaining about. Buying a car. Most people don’t whinge half as much as I do about a simple process which is, frankly, a situation I should be grateful for, not one where I should be complaining. I have earned enough that I can borrow enough money to be able to buy a bottom of the barrel hybrid, or, were I less of a ethical person a pretty damn nice second hand car (actually, I could borrow much more than that and buy a much nicer car, I just don’t want to).
Not phenominal, but something mid-range pleasant and a few years old.
But I won’t.
I want something that at least stands vaguely near my ethics. I am loathe to buy a car anyhow, I wish that the frickin’frakin’Austin had worked out better, but having spent the better part of a month in a garage waiting, waiting, waiting for it to be fixed I’m now forced to conclude that it’d be unwise to put it back on the road and then attempt to rack up infinite miles in it. Not because I don’t think it would cope. It probably would and probably would be adequately reliable. Until something important broke, and then I’d be back to ‘oh shit, I can’t earn anything’. This week, for example, I was intending to spend doing agency work. I’d set myself up mentally with ‘lots of agency shifts’. Now I could have hired a car for the week and done it, but it’d’ve cost me at least the entire value of a single shift and then I’d have the bonus paranoia of ‘I MUST WORK EVERY SHIFT’ to try and make the money back. And if I didn’t get a shift… ooh the stress.
So I’ve been looking at cars.

Decisions, Decisons
I’m trying to decide whether to go and look at cars tomorrow (preferable in terms of them not selling before I go look) or friday (more time for dongle and software to arrive).
Both the Diagnostic Software and the cable say that they should be here today. It would be really nice to be able to turn up, plug in the cable and go ‘ah, no’ or ‘ah, let’s go for a test drive’ without faffing about with guesswork about the state of the batteries, or whether there are any known dubious faults with the car.
In a way it’s good, it’s nice to have that reassurance that I can plug in a device and it should tell me lots of important things about the car, I’m not so reliant on listening and feeling for problems (a system that obviously worked so well when buying the Austin), but also it’s scary modern shit.

It looks more like an industrial power generator than anything else, but this trailer is hiding something awesome beneath its rough exterior…I did promise I’d be sharing car stuff occasionally. And this is one such time. Wow, given time and money, I’d love one of these, perhaps with some spare batteries and a 4×4 off-road EV to go with it.

When I started Stargate, I got the part, I was SO thrilled to have this INCREDIBLE character, to be playing someone in the military. I had SO much respect, to be playing someone who’s so smart and so liberated and… I thought “Yes!”
I had two weeks to move from Toronto to Vancouver. I flew out there, I had my first wardrobe fitting. And one of the things that was in… THE thing that was in the wardrobe room was a very low-cut tank top and a push-up bra…
And I turned to the costume designer – whom I’ve worked with since, who’s wonderful – and I said “What… What is this?”
And she said “Well.. they wanna see what you look like in it.”
And I said “…but this… NOBODY in the military, no captain in the US airforce would wear this… while her male counterparts are wearing crewneck t-shirts and… I c… I can’t do it!”
And she said “Well, they just wanna see what you look like and take a picture and…”
I was like “…”.
And I PANICKED because I thought, I had just been given this AMAZING opportunity – I didn’t know it would last 10 years but I knew it was gonna be a kick-ass show – and I was like… “I can’t do it…”And I started to cry and I said “You have to go upstairs and tell them I’m not doing it. And if it means that they recast the part then recast the part but you’ve cast a smart woman and you’ve cast somebody who has NEVER tried to get a job based on her looks or her body, I’ve always played strong, smart women, I… I can’t do it. So if they wanna recast the part I totally get it but I’m not playing THAT version of this character.”
But I’m saying this while I’m blubbering because I’m suffering that I’ve just lost maybe the best job of my career…
And so she said “Okay” and I said “I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I’ve NEVER been difficult, I don’t… but I CAN’T do that!”
So she went upstairs and she came back down and she said “Okay, no problem.”
And I said “Okay, so what’s my costume?”
And she said “Well…”
And I said “Just… What are the guys wearing?”
So she handed me a black T-Shirt and the BDUs, which is what my character would wear in the field with her male counterparts, and that’s where we went from there.But that to me was the defining moment of…
And I STILL cry about it because I still remember that young woman on the verge of breaking into the… new something big, being petrified that she was gonna loose it, but… I knew that I couldn’t play the TNA version of Sam Carter.Amanda Tapping
