  • Brief updates from the sick-bed^W sofa

    Heh.

I’m good at the whining, no? *cough cough* ;)

Seriously, a few thoughts that have occurred today:

    + I really should update the website, I’ve not been 26 for a while…
+ It doesn’t even link to my flickr page – the photo gallery has been unchanged since about 2k6 too..
+ I need to get out there with my camera some more. I’ve been neglecting that hobby badly; and my old SLR is feeling sad too.
+ Antibiotics still make me feel crap, but my tonsils have less pus on them than yesterday, which has got to be a good thing.
+ My beloved wife is the most awesome person, she turned up at home today with an innocent smoothie, an a copy of practical classics (and half a twix bar) :)))
+ “I was going to get you New Scientist but I couldn’t remember if you like it” *grins*. She rocketh.
+ She’s making a cake! For us! And she’s letting me sit on the couch and loaf because “you’re sick”. She is *such* a wonderful person to me. I totally don’t deserve someone so awesome.
    + DAR
+ We ate peas and beans from the garden today and they were hell-a tasty.
+ Carpenters appear to have similar time keeping skills to builders. I.e. none at all. Looks around at all the carpenteering that’s gone on today (i.e. none) and mutters darkly.
+ Builders are very happy to put off work. ‘Can you come in a weeks time’ ‘oh! no problem’.
+ I&A Car Services, in Slough, continue to inspire me with ongoing competence.
+ Some e-bay sellers do not, although the world is tormenting me by supplying all the things that didn’t arrive while I was working on the car in my week off.
+ The final season of The Wire starts off damn harsh. Last season though. Why did I not know about this when it was on?!
+ I’ve opted to take the other 2 days I was meant to work at the beginning of the week off sick. Pustular tonsillitis I’ve decided, warrants a few days off. More importantly the feeling like crap on antibugs warrants it.

  • Diagnosis correct, unfortunately.

So, I said I thought I was coming down with something. I did try and see my GP but there weren’t any emergency appointments left; so while at work I asked one of the doctors to have a quick peer down my throat.

About 30 seconds later I was booking myself in, so that my antibiotics could be prescribed, and he told me I should take a few days off. I finished off my shift tho’

I feel not rubbish, but not well. And have consistently had a temperature through the day. I think I’ve got one now, too. So at least tomorrow off, and I’ll see how I’m feeling midday tomorrow for the next day :-/

  • Potentially ‘coming down with something’

So all week (after my 77hour week before; just in case I’d not mentioned that) I’ve had a bit of a sore throat. It’s mainly gone away so long as I’ve drunk plenty in the morning, but it’s been there quite definitely for the last couple of days, needing plenty of fluids through the day to chivy it away. It was quite specific when it was there; on the right side of my throat and nowhere else.

Today I’ve been feeling generally knackered; more so than the slightly late bed-time yesterday and the busyiness of the week that we’ve had should prompt. Finally, since the pain’s spread to my right ear too (and it’s an annoying niggly pain) I peered down my throat using the bathroom mirror. One of my tonsils is quite big and red.

    Which seems unfair.

Still, we did get a new toilet seat (which Kathryn’s fitted, and which is much, much nicer than the manky one we saved from the old bathroom); a new bathroom bin (which is more bathroom appropriate than the old office bin); cleared out the wardrobe for the arrival of the carpenter; obtained 2 new deckchairs (one of which appears to be somewhat frustratingly missing a bit, so I’ll have to pop over to B&Q tomorrow); I ordered the tool for the car; moved the records downstairs (so the carpenter can carpent, or whatever it is they do); moved the 13″ Rims from the van (to be returned tomorrow); attempted to get Kwik Fit to fit tyres to the new wheels (they don’t have any stock); Tried to decide if they’ll actually hold pressure so I can drive to Kwik Fit; and laid on the bed for a while going ‘blurgh’.

Oh, and listened to the ‘new’ A.M. CD – which arrived – along with the present for Kathryn (Alix Olson).

Oh, and hired a car for next week.

And we cleaned the bathroom, the bedroom and some of the kitchen…

All in all it’s been positively busy around here :)

  • Juicy Tasty Defeat

    DAF Service Manual Cover

So, having discussed a variety of options for getting the piston rings compressed it came down to ‘you need a ring compressor’. Since the ring compressor I’ve ordered from e-bay is the same as the one I bought it’ll be going back on e-bay as soon as it arrives. I’ve ordered the correct ring compressor now (it’s a splitable ring compressor) and will have another go as soon as that arrives.

Which left me in the challenging situation of, well, not having a car.

    Or a bike.

Yet again I’m down to renting – I’ve reserved a car – so I can literally take back the van in the morning and come back with a rental car. :-/

Nikki commented on the fact that at the moment I don’t appear to have a reliable car between the three of ’em; somewhat distressing though it is, and true though it is, I hope to remedy the situation; in so far as I’ve arranged for Rebecca to go back to JLH and have much more work done. New king pins, trunnions, new gearbox, new, new, new. Anyone for a philosopher’s axe?

She’s currently languishing outside the house, and the DAF is stuck on ramps. I’m praying – with all my heart – that once the engine’s sorted we can get a bit of peace and quiet on the DAF front – although talking to Matt yesterday didn’t give me great hope.

I still need to source a new accelerator cable for Jejy – and I need to package up and send off the shoes for Vixy (can do that on Monday too)… Anyhow, today is; instead of previously planned engine and DAF work, cleaning the house.

Fear the whining next week as I have to drive a modern car.

  • To the middle of nowhere and back again

So, the other reason for hiring the van was collecting 8 old clutch shoes, 5 13″ rims for the DAF, 2 exhausts, and a partridge in a pear….no, that’s not right, one DAF Workshop Manual (none of this faffy autodata nonsense). I finally got to meet ‘Matt’ who so far has lived entirely on my phone with his stock of spares and his place in the middle of no-where containing a huge number of DAFs and DAF parts.

We were a bit late, but he was very nice – supplying us with tea – and we chatted DAFs and other classics for a couple of hours before we piled all the bits in the van and headed back. After a small navigational faux pas (twice) we managed to find the route back…

…there was very little traffic – and we arrived home at about half 3.

…And I set to on the DAF. Well, actually, I went off to get a ring compressor because the e-bay one I bought hasn’t turned up. I realised, however, that although it looked like it would split, the way I need it to, it probably won’t. Anyhow, I went to Halfords and Jagdev. Neither of them had a suitable one. So I went back and got a couple of jubilee clips – and then I went back and got the right size of jubilee clips, by which time it was 5.

So I set to on the DAF. With Kathryn’s help I got the new rings on in place of the old ones; but no amount of coaxing, swearing (there was a lot of it), depressed whining (tried quite a lot of that) would get the rings compressed enough (using the jubilee clips around the leaves from a feeler gauge) to get them on. I’m swinging wildly between dropping the engine off and having it done for me and ordering one from e-bay (they’re moderately expensive). Tomorrow at 10 I’m going to ring the ever illustrious Millards and see if they have one, with luck they will, and the utterly awesome Nikki and Kate shall ferry it to me.

    new rings

If they don’t; well; that’s a whole ‘nother kettle of piranhas.

I have to say, this week’s left me feeling very demoralised. The DAF’s in more bits than when the week began, the bike is no-where near ready, the other DAF is in the garage…

Unless tomorrow brings more good fortune than a bucket load positive of fortune cookies then I can’t see me ending this week with a running vehicle. And my lipoma looks like it’s got bigger. *Sighs*

  • Today is…

I dropped off Kathryn’s DAF (Vixy) at the garage this morning, which went fine. I’m praying that I’m right and that the clutch shoes are worn out… Anyhow.

One of the cooler things about owning a classic, or one of the things I enjoy anyway, is getting packages through the post that have fallen through a hole in time. Such was my experience today when a ‘Cords’ brand 1970s package popped through our postbox. I’ve recorded the ‘unboxing’…

    the cords box

There’s something terribly cool about opening things that have sat for decades. Something fun about encountering design intended for a different generation (and they got the swoosh!*). Anyhow, so they arrived; sadly the ring compressor doesn’t appear to have arrived. Hopefully it’ll arrive tomorrow. However, what did arrive was the clutch shoes. I am so unutterably impressed by Jim Jack Services – they had the shoes arrive yesterday – called me to check on the details – and had sent them back by the evening. They arrived today – and look like they did when I last got new shoes.

Despite not having a manual I guessed my way through replacing the drum (it looked easy) – and eventually got it right (it was about 3mm out when I first did it) – and got the clutch back together. Then I made the mistake of having lunch.

Well, technically the lunch wasn’t the mistake – no – it was sitting on the rug in the lounge. I’ve done this every day, but I’ve not been dealing with something quite as dirty as the contents of the clutch. And I was silly enough to clean out the flywheel too. So there was a lot of dirt.

It was on my jeans. Now it’s on the rug.

Then I made the mistake of starting on the bike. I started in quite a good mood, despite the fact that the manual (and therefore my notes on how to wire the rev-counter to the old-style wiring, the circuit diagrams, and the explanantion of where the clutch should be adjusted to) remained elusive. I started stripping down Cherry Red ‘zed, carefully working my way through noting where the wires went from the switchgear – and then it dawned on me…

I’ve got three partial looms from three bikes with three separate wiring and connection schemes. Seriously.

MZ changed their wiring for the later bikes, with their electronic ignition and electronic regulator; Kanuni changed the wiring again when they started building bikes, because they didn’t do with the nice clicky MZ connectors. Oh no. They went back to the good solid DDR connection blocks with 55 wires going in and out of each one.

After a while it dawned on me that I had an impending disaster on my hands.

I needed a diagram, or something, to give me some idea of where I should be looking. The front end is more or less wired, the alternator is partially reconnected to the rectifier and regulator. I plodded through assembling it – discovered in the process that I really do need some obstruction wrenches because I can’t actually get the Bing Carb (better, faster, more efficient) off Cherry, so Charlie’s stuck with my old BvF (proper DDR, and has covered 120k miles). I sprayed the side panel (badly, I didn’t have any primer, so it went straight over the blue paint. Fluo-Pink as it’s called is not big on coverage). I also found a patch where the paint’s flaked off the frame – I couldn’t afford shot-blasting when I did it – so I wirebrushed and sanded the old paint, but perhaps I should have stripped it all off – because there’s a small patch where it’s flaked off.

When I spray the DAF I’ll touch up the frame :(

    Anyhow.

Poor Kathryn arrived home as I stood in a rotten mood contemplating how in hell I was going to work out the wiring on the bike. Feeling like I’d taken 2 potential runners and made one impossible to fix vehicle.

But then I remembered this website – and a bit of dinking – and here we are with simplified diagrams and what each of the connectors actually is. Thank fuck.

    Death and Rebirth

And in a totally unrelated to motorbikes, cars, or anything else I normally ramble about, I’d been contemplating writing something about Barack “Change we can’t believe in” Obama’s release regarding the DoMA. The problem is it’s likely to come out as an depressed rant. I’ve been unimpressed with Obama for a while; his stance on abuse photos, on individual privacy, on illegal wiretaps; it’s all been bad. So I guess the DoMA announcement seems like more of the same. Anyhow, so it was going to be a rant, but then I read this over Kathryn’s shoulder, and it was articulate; intelligent; and it said everything I could have considered wanting to say, were I feeling anywhere near as good at expressing myself as this writer. So go read.

In final other news, after much work I’ve finally found a builder who has at least actually turned up, and quoted for the work on the driveway, and moreso has actually agreed to come and do the work. So next week for a day or two we’ll have to get the fleet off the drive. Once it’s done though, we should be able to get two cars on the drive. Which will assist in making-other-people-happy. :)

    * I remember, years ago, when Amazon’s swoosh was new and shiny there was a website snarking about everyone having swooshes which enabled you to design your new e-logo for your new e-business. It was swooshtastic.

  • Kathryn & I found this…

Kathryn and I found this stove:

    abandoned aga
     abandoned aga-oid

kicking around on the street near where I live. Sadly there was no-one in and it looks like they damaged it a little during it’s removal. But it’s almost certainly repairable, all there, and appears to have been left out for scrap.

If anyone wants it, give me a shout and see if I can sort it :) It’s a terrible shame for it to go to waste – it’d be ideal if someone’s doing a green/eco house project :)

  • No, seriously, Argh.

After two years of sitting in the garage I brought the manual for the MZ home after my last trip. Today I’ve searched everywhere obvious, and quite a few non-obvious places and the fucking thing has just disappeared.

Short of actually emptying the shed entirely, something I’m seriously contemplating doing, I have no concept of where it could be. I’m hoping for ‘fell down the back of one of the shelves where the MZ boxes live’.

    It’s beyond frustrating.

  • Augh

Trying to make decisions is hard, especially when people go around making them harder. I arranged for a courier company to move the bike…2 weeks ago. I’ve not heard hide-nor-hair from them since. Which lead me to contemplate hiring a van and fetching it myself. Honestly? The cost is pretty much the same, but it’s way more hastle. So, my other plan, cunning as it was was to use the van to go and fetch the bits for the DAF which I oh-so-desperately need, from Colchester, which is where they be lurkin’.

Unfortunately, the guy who’s got them informed me that he can’t do it this week. This relates to a conversation about parts that started back in April! He can, possibly, do it on Saturday.

I’m seriously, therefore, debating habing the van for four days. Inconvenient it might be, but at this point I’m a bit desperate. With the van I can theoretically have the car up and running by Monday, and potentially the bike too.

Without it, I’m unlikely to have either.

…and I checked with the courier company; they’re not up for picking up the bike this week, so I’m going to go fetch in the van I’ve hired, which oddly was cheaper to hire for 4 days than just for the weekend. So Saturday is a go for getting car bits.

Sunday is a go for putting the car together, I hope.

Progress on the car’s been good anyhow. New rings ordered (today), ring expander/compressor ordered (yesterday), engine out, clutch shoes sent off, need to get that new drum fitted and I’ve even got some stuff to tidy up the engine bay. I used some vicious planet destroying engine cleaner yesterday and it was incredible. The engine went from being like this:

    Filthy DAF engine

    To being like this:

    cleaner DAF engine

There’s still much to be cleaned, but I forked out for two more of the viciously expensive cleaners today. Also forked out for some VHT paint to tart up the old-new inlet manifold to replace the one that’s all cracks. It’s blue, because that’s all that Jagdev had in. It’s cool though, because the plug leads and the new silicone vacuum hose is all blue. She’s going to be all bling/pimp’d ;)

I’ve also got some spray paint so I’m going to give the bonnet a quick coat of paint too.

But right now I’ve got to go and hunt for the stuff for teaching kids about plaster ‘n stuff. I’ve not got a sling otherwise which is a bit of an annoyance. The rest of the stuff I’ve got :)

  • The fear & the irony

So, this week I’m very busy. Shower, 2 cars and a motorbike to fix. To reduce the amount of work I got the engineer who worked on the Viva to look at one of the DAFs. To say he looked scared is an understatement. He looked like I’d just shown him the devil, incarnate, in car form. Only 2 cylinders? Horizontally opposed? What new evil is this?!

He wandered off saying he’d think about it, and then a few days ago decided that he’d not be willing to stretch his engineering skills by tackling a horizontally opposed twin. He did suggest a company that will, thankfully. Unfortunately, this doesn’t get me any closer to having the car actually running.

I’m going to ring my pet garage and beg, plead, grovel with them to do a clutch change on Vixy – a job which only involves sending the clutch shoes to bloody glasgow.

    Anyhow.

I also have, as I said, the shower to tackle. Since having the unblocking guy around it’d leaked, much worse than before, indeed we’d actually stopped using it.

I spent the week beating myself up in my sleep, waking feeling down on myself, and poking myself mentally in the eye for my poor quality plumbing. Irony of ironies, and unfortunately after I’d ripped up two tiles and chipped a third (so that’ll have to come up too); there’s nothing wrong with my plumbing.

There was, however, a loose seal on the pressure reducing valve for the shower.

Drip drip drip went the valve (to paraphrase Judy Garland, apparently). Having turned the water off, removed the offending valve, tightened up the seal on it and put it back, the drip, drip, drip, appears to have stopped.

I hope I’ve got enough tiles to put it all back… I’m going to spray it with bleachy mould killer and leave it a few days to dry out all the same.

    Anyhow, drip check, then phonecalls.
