  • It is raining

This is something I became aware of in rather too much detail, largely because at the point when it started raining I was lying outside under the car with the exhaust in that perilous half-on-half-off state which meant I couldn’t easily remove it, nor put it back without finishing the job.

Still, now we have a bodged on half-assed-potentially ass-backwards exhaust that should last maybe a couple of hundred miles. If we’re lucky.

overstimulation tip: turn down the brightness on your (phone, tv, computer) screens as low as you can. they’ll feel a lot less stressful.

You can also get an app for android called Twilight which lets you change the colour of the screen to make it even darker.

There’s also a mac app called f.lux which alters brightness and colour balance dependent on time of day…

Apparently, my best beloved does not believe my statement that mead is a perfectly valid treatment for my cold “because honey”.

    Drywall Day

We got the whole studio ceiling hung yesterday, and had just enough 5/8 drywall. I’d theoretically bought enough to do the studio plus the little laundry room bit (which we weren’t going to do until later), but I didn’t factor in the weird way the trusses failed to line up with a standard sheet……

That is awesomely impressive working. Drywalling takes way longer than you expect it to… Are you guys skimming it yourselves? Or do you have someone else coming in to do that?

In other news, we found a house that just needs some minor renovations that both Kathryn and I fancied…

Looks good eh? Just a bit of minor garden work, pop a new roof on, and it’ll be shiny ;)

“We’re” skimming it. And when I say “we” I mean “Dad is teaching me once and then leaving me to it because it sucks” and when I say “Dad is leaving me to it” I mean “Every time we left a gap or dented the drywall or had a bad edge, dad said ‘Who cares? That’ll be YOUR problem.’”

As for the picture, well, location, location, location. Perhaps you can pop the garden on as a roof… no, wait, you tried that earlier… we already know you manage without heat, I’m sure internal walls won’t be a problem. :D

Oh you lucky, lucky soul. Skimming is just a joy, I tell you. A joy. And I must admit I’ve never* really tried to plaster using real plaster. I’ve always used the premixed lazy-ass stuff with various modifiers in it. The problem is, you get one bit perfect and just as you’re going:

    “YAY! I ROCK”

You notice that you (well, I) have created a tiny ridge between your perfect bit and the bit that was previously perfect, and you go back, and then you try and fix it and suddenly the whole thing looks like a motocross track again, and you have to do more working.

Granted last time I did this I was doing a curved wall, and eventually I was able to walk away and go ‘I really do fucking rock’, but it took years off my life.

And as for Kathryn and I’s next project, I was thinking with your plasterboard drywalling skills and newly perfected plastering, you could pop over and lend a hand with the interior walls.

    Yeah?

    * Once, I remember the phrase hideous disaster, but can’t actually remember the results. And it was a long time ago. Sufficiently far that I don’t think I’ll count it.

  • So that went well.

So, after debate and searching I ended up buying an Austin 1300 Auto. A car that doesn’t exist.

We’re in the comment period for the new FCC regulations which destroy Internet network neutrality. This may seem like an esoteric issue to you, but it’s not. It’s a core infrastructure question: whether you have to pay more to actually get your network traffic delivered. If you’re completely unfamiliar, here’s John Oliver talking about it in a funny but accurate way.

Gizmodo has step-by-step instructions on how to use the FCC’s comment form. I’ve filed my comment/complate; go file yours, even if it’s really short. There’s enough money on both sides of this that we have that little window of opportunity where public commentary can just maybe matter.

Is that cynical? No, it’s realistic. Take advantage of these opportunities when they appear. And go file that comment.

Mirrored from Crime and the Blog of Evil. Come check out our music!

Reminding everybody that ALL THIS STILL APPLIES AND THE COMMENT PERIOD IS STILL OPEN. If you didn’t do this, go do it.

In a purely selfish way, I would like to live in the US soon, so please don’t let them break the internet there… go comment :)

Video Shows Pittsburgh Cop Punching Teen At Gay Pride In An Apparent Use Of Excessive Force

A video showing a Pittsburgh Police officer using what appears to be excessive force on a 19-year-old Pittsburgh PrideFest attendee, has sparked outrage online after it was shared on Facebook late Sunday afternoon.

According to eyewitness Autumn Huntera, the incident occurred around 5 o’clock Sunday afternoon. Huntera explains that the teen engaged in a heated debate with a group of anti-gay protesters attending the Pride festival: “She was saying that being gay is not a sin and that she was a lesbian and proud of it, and that she wasn’t going to hell for it.”

Huntera detailed her account of the incident for us:

The girl was debating with one of the protesters, and she stepped closer without even realizing it and the officer ran over to her. He grabbed her by the back of her neck, pulled her over, dropped her on the ground, pulled her up by her hair, and said “Do you want me to hit you.” When she didn’t respond, he hit her in stomach area about 4 or 5 times repeatedly. After everyone yelled at him, he hand cuffed her, put her against a wall. She was crying against a wall next to her ‘attacker’ while her fiancee was panicking trying to find someone who recorded it.

Huntera adds that the protester and teen were about a foot apart when the officer grabbed her without prior warning.

Please signal boost, the news stations in the area are NOT giving it much airtime or writing articles about it, so we need to spread the word.

Pittsburgh cops are known for being super corrupt and I won’t be surprised if nothing comes of this and he walks away a free man. DONT LET THAT HAPPEN

    Indeed.

Reblog if you’ve ever seen a rotary-dial phone that had letters as well as numbers on the dial-face and know what the letters were for. :)

my parents still have one of those…

    (via british-men-ruined-my-life)

When I was very young, my parents had a rotary phone (letters and numbers).

They eventually returned it to the phone company.

We actually have two in our house. They did work, but we haven’t bothered to have our landline reconnected and I can’t find my VOIP converter (it’s in the house somewhere, when I find it I’ll hook them back up).

    You may telephone from here...

They’re great, not only do the people you talk to sound like they’re from the 1940s, when you talk back it sounds like you’ve travelled back in time. There’s a certain quality to the audio from the carbon-granule mics and entirely analogue reduction of audio to transmissible down small copper wires that gives a really particular sound.

Oh yes, and you have to pay to use our payphone. So don’t forget to bring your shillings if you want to make a call at our house.
