hi, i’m sorry if this has been asked but in your powerpoint you said that the tumblr sj community is guilty of antisemitism. what kind of things has it done? also, i love your blog!

    returnofthejudai:

    debigotizer:

I’ll take this one since I’m the blog’s resident Jew.  Oy vey, where do I start…

    • SJ community loves to police Jewish identity and silence actual Jews when they talk about their own identities.  This usually happens in context of either “Are Jews White?” or “Jewishness is just a religion” conversations.  In reality, Jews are an ethnoreligious group that ethnically originated in the middle east, and while some ethnic Jews have light skin, it’s actually due to centuries of forced assimilation in European and Slavic countries through rape, which is a big reason why Jewishness is matrilineal.  Furthermore, there exist Jews who do not look white at all.  There are black, brown, and asian Jews who are all ethnically Jewish, and these conversations erase them.
    • “Jewish privilege”.  Fact: It’s not a thing.  It’s actually a very common anti-semitic trope that says that Jews run everything so they are not oppressed.  Jews are oppressed, and face anti-semitic violence.
    • “Anti-semitism is not just about Jews, there are other semitic people.” While yea, there are other semitic people, the term “anti-semitism” was created by Germans in the 19th century to refer specifically to the hatred of Jews because it sounded more scientific.
    • Blaming anti-semitic violence in Europe on the actions of Israel.  I see this literally every single day on this site, and it’s very upsetting.  Jews that live in the diaspora are not responsible for Israel’s actions, and especially should not be suffering at the hands of white people in Europe under the guise of anti-zionism.
    • Finally, and this is a big pet peeve of mine.  The only people I ever see reblogging posts about anti-semitism are other Jews.  Even a lot of my non-Jewish followers will reblog posts about racism, sexism, homophobia, etc. but ignore posts about anti-semitism, and that as a Jew makes me feel unsafe.

That’s enough for now.  If you’re interested in learning more about Jewish identity and anti-semitism, you are welcome to check out my personal blog: yochevedke.  I discuss that stuff a lot.

    -Yeva

Another Jew reblogging about anti-semitism. I’ve seen some increase in concern about this from goyim, but it’s been slow going. Hopefully we’ll pick up a big head of steam soon.

I’d never looked up the nonstandard-HTML Entity ‘Blink’, which has moved beyond deprecated to unsupported, but having a moment I looked it up tonight:

The examples section is remarkably brief:

No, really, don’t use it. It’s simply evil.

Rarely has a user manual been so accurate.

Of course the saddest thing is that many browsers no longer support perhaps the quintessential HTML tag. The tag that towers above all others. The tag that leaves women and children weeping and praying for mercy.

    the blink tag

Mind I’ve still got all my websites from back then, and I’m pretty certain that none of them used the Blink tag. Most of them still render okay, too. But it’s best not to read my journal. If you think the posts are tediously angst ridden now, you should have seen me 15 years ago.

Good god that blink tag’s annoying.

Scarecrow Video has been a Seattle institution for many years. It started as a video rental store – and still is one – but it was owned by the kind of crazed film fanatics who run a business primarily as a way to build the biggest collection of things imaginable. The original owner was the sort of person who would fly on an hour’s notice to former Soviet republics on the rumour that he could get a SECAM videotape copy of a particular obscure Stalinist-era Belorussian film. And half the time, he’d return with it.

Despite having one of the largest film collections in the world – possibly the largest in the world – video rental doesn’t cut it anymore, so they’re going non-profit. But that’s expensive, too, so they’re launching a Kickstarter to make it happen. Go help.

I started renting from them when they were next to J&S Phonograph Needles in Roosevelt – yes that was a store for phonograph needles it didn’t make much sense them either – and remember when they moved to the U. District, on 50th and Roosevelt. They bought out what used to be the biggest Radio Shack ever, a multistory building with its own screening lounge and everything.

It’s pretty damn cool, and it’d be a disaster to lose such a comprehensive film collection – particularly as it is actually available to the public. Even the exotic stuff can be rented and/or screened – they have multiformat players available, too. In some cases, they have one of only three to four copies of films still in existence, and you can see it. That’s the kind of collection this is.

I’ve known one of the current owners for a long time; this project is a big deal for them, too. So go help them flip that switch to non-profit. As I write this, they’ve made 60% of goal in a day, thanks in no small part to The Onion‘s AV Club. Let’s see if we can’t get them there by tomorrow, eh?

i’ve seen a lot of people reblogging news from ferguson, wondering if the situation has changed at all. the answer is YES—massively! so i thought i would compile some updates, courtesy of alderman antonio french (who, less than 24 hours ago, was being [wrongfully] held in jail for alleged unlawful assembly). the time right now is 4:20AM CST, august 15th.

yesterday afternoon—thursday, august 14th—ferguson & stl police were taken out of control of ferguson and replaced with MO highway patrol, led by captain ron johnson, who grew up in the area. his first order of business was to order police to remove their masks and cease violent tactics.

orange cones replaced tanks, the police line vanished, not a drop of tear gas was in sight and families felt safe enough to have their young people out protesting with them. without the fear tactics and police intimidation, people came out in droves to support ferguson.

the discussion of mike brown cannot end here. the relief is palpable and the decrease of tension under johnson’s excellent leadership is a huge mercy, but justice has not been served yet. now, hopefully, citizens will get to work together with the legal system for swift and transparent justice for mike brown & the countless other black men & women across the nation who have been unlawfully treated, and in many cases died, at the hands of police. let all of us use the alleviated atmosphere to focus the conversation, focus the nation. #mikebrown

Policing with respect for the citizens, and remembering that the people the police should serve are the citizens and no one else.

My hat is off to to Capt. Ron Johnson.

  • It mayn’t look like much

So our garden looks like we’ve kinda let nature go wild on a mixture of slightly selected plants. I actually kind of adore it and am endlessly frustrated by it. Back in Slough we did one thing really right; we planned it out and then dug the whole lot over, pretty much. So when it was laid out we weren’t faced with bits that weren’t path but still have grass on because they’ve not yet been dug into the beds.

So I’m creeping around and doing a bit here and a bit there to clear the grass off what will be the beds. And given that I couldn’t do anything much else, this afternoon was spent clearing a bit more. So the patch under the apple tree at the bottom, between the apple tree and this year’s potato bed, that’s looking pretty much sorted. There’s some scrubby patches off near the edges that need a little more, but when we dig it over with some compost or manure, or some mix of the two, that should improve that.

    Untitled

That scrubby patch of grass off to the right is where the path will run. I need to lop a bit of wood off and then plonk the gravel around for that bit…. The other issue down there is that the hedge is seriously overgrown, but that’s a problem for a whole other day, that’s my opinion!

This big patch of scrubby grass is where we’re moving all the turf to. I don’t seem to have a photo of it but it’s been the scabby bit of land between our garage and our lowest terrace; the intention is that next year we’ll have a hammock over it, because it’s the one bit of our garden that gets shade in the early evening and afternoon. It’s horribly uneven because I literally dump whatever chunks of grass I dig up from other sections onto it and then leave it to see if it takes. I did water it in the heat of the summer, but that’s been the total extent of my love and kindness to it.

It’s quite nicely meadowy when it takes though, and we’ll probably try and find some meadow seeds to throw into it, to make ourselves a little mini wildflower meadow to hide in.

    Untitled

Looking up from the same place you can see that things have got a little exuberant; there’s quite a bit of weeding to do (which I did a little of today). You can also see the plum tree…

    Which provided this delicious morsel!

    First plum of the year...

We bought that tree as one of three from a farm shop (by which we mean a shop in which farmers buy 10s of trees to build up orchards) in Cornwall: a plum and apple and a cherry. The apple is fantastic (James Grieves, I think, is the variety and it’s delicious) and has been really productive this year. The cherry we never get anything off, because the birds eat every damn thing, and this year is the first year the plum’s produced anything. This is the first one I’ve eaten…and it was worth the wait. Lord it was yummy.

And then, finally we come to this. It may not look like much, but it’s a mixture of lots of carrots, celeriac and some poppies. I think there might be some fennel hiding in there too! It’s a raised bed that I threw together to try and keep the slug problem down a bit. It seems to have worked, by throwing lots of nematode stuff in there, and lots of slug-killing pellets, it now seems to have reached a more controlled stage where we don’t seem to need to do too much with it. The carrots and other veg seem to be growing pretty enthusiastically…

    Untitled

Next year we shall have to top up the soil a fair bit, because we didn’t have enough to fill it this year. Not that we want it complete full, but fuller’n it is.

So it is coming along, in a kind of slightly half-arsed way.

  • Yeah, so about that

Yesterday as I drove home I thought ‘oh, the indicators are flashing somewhat irregularly, I wonder if the alternator’s okay’. See, the Minor when I used to get the alternator kit from Charles Ware, it used to eat them. I don’t know why, but it did. Then I traded it for an alternative alternator – something more reliable from another, more modern car. And lo the problem was solved.

But I have this recollection of well before the warning light’d kick in, other electrical systems, particularly voltage dependent ones, like the indicators, would get a bit erratic. Faster-slower-faster-slower.

I thought I’d check the voltage, but couldn’t remember where I’d put the volt meter. I had a quick look in the garage but it wasn’t there (shame I didn’t look in the boot).

Today on my way to a shift, the coil reached a temperature of insane high-ness, the condenser ceased to have any resistance, and I had a relaxing sit at the side of the motorway.

    Weeeell....bollocks.

And lo, she was pronounced unrepairable at the side of the road.

Hoiked unceremoniously up on a trailer and taken to a my favoured garage who will hopefully get her back on four wheels by the weekend (next weekend). Which puts a substantial crimp in my ‘I’ll do some shifts before the holiday’ plan.

    Fooey.
