  • We have an apartment!

Of sorts. It’s kind of a studio-garage-partial conversion. It’s 500sq ft of tiny, but it’s our space that we shall unpack some of our stuff into.

Of course, that means that we have fun activities planned for the weekend like “Oh, we’ll need furniture” and “a mattress would be handy!” and “ah, yes, we got rid of the printer before we left” which Kathryn finds very useful for her job.

To be fair, our old printer wouldn’t have worked for her job anyway.

But I have just commenced the massive spending spree that will be us – 6 months from moving – sort of moving in*.

    * We move in Thursday! After the EV capable socket gets installed. Wheee.

Native Americans weren’t allowed US citizenship until 1924.

Let that sink in. We lived here first…for thousands of years. And less than a hundred years ago we were finally given citizenship.

We also fought in WWI despite not being US citizens.

In Arizona, natives weren’t granted the right to vote until 1948. Think how that type of neglect ties into resource colonization as infrastructure was developed within years prior.

In addition: the indigenous peoples of Canada were not recognized as Human Beings until the year 1960.
Now let that shit sink in.

In the US it wasn’t until 1968 that the Indian Civil Rights Act was passed and allowed for the right to freedom of speech / assembly / press, a jury trial, the right to an attorney etc. It’s so fucking frustrating.

and it wasn’t until 1978 that we were legally allowed to practice our own religions. in a nation founded on religious freedoms, it was illegal to practice our own religions. in our own country. how fucked up is that?

Aaaand Native Americans weren’t entitled to their own languages (had no legal rights to teach them in their schools, use them in business) until the Native American Language Act of 1990.

I teach this to my students, because NONE of it is in a single textbook. This is and act of indoctrination

Boosting because I didn’t know any of this.

These facts should be known by all.

In Canada, Native peoples were imprisoned in reservations and not allowed to leave without a pass, until 1951.

The Viking Ship Museum in Roskilde was surprisingly interactive!
There were even ethnobotanical displays showing different species of
tree, and how they have been used for shipbuilding in Denmark and
    Norway.

It was especially nice seeing so many women artisans demonstrating traditional trades, like carpentry and rope-making.

They’ve done a number of cool things in the past (sailing to Dublin in a traditional craft, for example), and right now, they are working on an “open-source” boat project, collaborating with archaeologists, botanists, historians, and craftspeople.

    New York Times article

    Esquire article

They’re also trying to bar women from combat positions (again), ban pornography, stop cohabitation of unmarried couples, and give federal parks back to the states because that obviously won’t result in 80% of them being completely destroyed for profit.

Oh, and then there’s this (from the Times article):

    The
platform demands that lawmakers use religion as a guide when
legislating, stipulating “that man-made law must be consistent with
    God-given, natural rights.”

    It
also encourages the teaching of the Bible in public schools because,
the amendment said, a good understanding of its contents is
“indispensable for the development of an educated citizenry.”

Bear in mind, this isn’t Trump’s platform.  It’s the WHOLE FUCKING PARTY.  So remember:  It still is not enough to vote for President and wash your hands of everything else.  Know what’s going to be on your ballot, and vote in EVERY race.  Get these fuckers out of office before they make their shitty platform federal law.

Oh, how charming. I always know they’re feeling particularly excitable when they charge all the way back to regarding straight cohabitation as a sin.

This is the flailing charge over the cliff, guys. Stop them for everybody’s good.

Oh, and read the first amendment. For some reason pepole really love that one when it comes to inappropriately using it to defend their assholery under free speech, but handily forget the ‘no establishment of religion’ part.
