Remember a while ago I talked about the “bitchin’ metal hurdy-gurdy solo” that Nicolas Boulerice did at a Le Vent du Nord show in Victoria? And I talked to him after the show and found out that he had in fact been in a metal band before going onto Quebecois trad music?

This is called “cutting out the middleman.”

Let me talk to you about books.
    Specifically, one book. This book.
This book deals with debunking “Neurosexism,” which is a very fancy term for all of that evolutionary psychology bullshit that people spill about those “brain differences” between boys and girls.
This book debunks such myths as:

    • Boys are better at math than girls
    • Women make crappy lawyers/business CEOs/etc, as their brains are not cut out for aggression.
    • Men make crappy counselors/primary school teachers/primary parents/etc, as their brains are not cut out for empathy.
    • MEN ARE BUILT FOR GOING OUT AND HUNTING WHILE WOMEN ARE BUILT FOR STAYING HOME AND BABYMAKING IT’S NOT SEXISM IT’S JUST BIOLOGY
    • And many other such myths.
    • Neurosexism and gender perceptions in multiple races (as this is not a singularly white experience, just as the western world isn’t a singularly white experience)
    • Sex discrimination in the workplace, and how women are (or, more often, are not) allowed to behave
    • How science is used (badly) to support many of these claims
    • Experiences of trans* people, both through interviews and empirical studies.

Furthermore, this book covers topics such as:
AND FINALLY – It is all brilliantly researched, cited, compiled – and it’s easy to read! Cordelia Fine actually manages to be funny while writing this, which I think is important, because it makes all of this information infinitely accessible.

Here’s a PDF for those that cannot afford it/are frightened to buy it.

So it turns out that it’s quite stressful this.

I spent much of the day feeling pretty f’kin low, because our car which is probably worth about 3-3.5k now it’s cleaned and shiny is not selling. Apparently Xmas is a terrible time of year to sell a car. Of course, the reason we’re trying to sell at Xmas is because our solicitors and the other solicitors were so painfully slow.

But after an e-bay auction with one solitary bid from a f’kin idiot who wanted to, but couldn’t retract his bid. Apart from that. No one.

So non-paying bidder aside we’ve had multiple people offer then not follow up with actually turning up.

Which is very, very stressful. And upsetting, because I’d kinda counted that money into the pot of ‘money we’ll have at some point’.

Also, I spent the entire afternoon washing tools in Jeyes Fluid in the hopes that customs will not be pissed at us for bringing diseases in. Everything should be dead now.

    Bah.

Sexual Assault is a bigger problem than one might think within Police Department, and no one is talking about it.

In a year long investigation of sexual misconduct by US law enforcement, the Associated press uncovered roughly 1000 officers who’ve lost their badges in a 6 year period for sex crimes that included rape, sodomy, propositioning citizens to have sex, possession of child pornography etc.

To make matters worse, that number is a severe undercount because it only represents those officers whose license was revoked, and not all states took that action.

AND, on top of that, 9 states and the District Columbia said they either did not punish officers for misconduct or decline to provide any information.

Tumblr, I haven’t seen any good posts about my history girlfriend, so I think you should know about her so you can love her too. This sassy cutie right here is Pamela “Pixie” Colman Smith.

    • She is best known for being the artist of the Rider-Waite tarot deck, the most famous and widely sold deck in the world, a job for which she got practically no credit and “very little money,” in her words (she died penniless while Waite made bundles)

    • Waite, the “designer” (tarot scholar that commissioned it) was very condescending and exacting about how he wanted the major arcana done (even though she ignored him sometimes anyway; they were on a tight schedule and she’d send him fully inked and watercolored designs without his approval so they didn’t have time to redo them). But Waite turned up his nose at using the tarot for divination rather than as a spiritual guide, so he didn’t really give a shit about the minor arcana

    • The designs for those are therefore p much all her, inspired by the 15th century Sola Busca deck (the only other one at that point to feature fully illustrated pip cards) which was on display at a museum near her while she was working on the project

    • I’ll pause to allow you to imagine her making trip after trip to the museum with her sketchbook, studying the cards and chewing on her pencil. You in love yet? Just wait

    • She was a synesthete who would listen to classical music and draw beautiful “spiritual portraits” of the music

    • She was a suffragette, and drew feminist political cartoons

    • She was an actress and set designer for a while; you can see the inspiration in many of the stage-like cards in her tarot deck

    • She was best bros with cool people like Edith Craig, WB Yeats, and Bram Stoker

    • Although she faced a lot of condescension from the men around her since they considered visual art a much less valid and sophisticated form of spiritual and intellectual pursuits, she was by all accounts very smart and wickedly funny, and ridiculously sweet and kind

    • She was almost definitely super gay (had a very gay social circle, never married, lived alone with another woman for years)

    • In conclusion you should all love her and we should call it the Smith deck and not the Waite, thank you and goodnight

White shooter, black victims. Media bias will supply “lone wolf” narrative.

Racist shoots Black Lives Matter group, media makes zero connection with other white racists shooting black people.

White terrorism is invisible to media.

Not just the media. He’s being charged with 2nd degree assault with a dangerous weapon.

    Not attempted murder.

    Not a hate crime.

    Assault.

This is institutional white supremacy in action.
