periodic reminder that:
- there are lots of reasons why someone might use a wheelchair
- plenty of wheelchair users are able to walk or stand to some small degree
- plenty of wheelchair users have fluctuating conditions that mean that their mobility needs and ability changes day by day
- “wheelchair-bound” is an ableist phrase
- it’s not appropriate to ask someone why they’re using a wheelchair unless you have a specific need for that information
- you should never push someone’s wheelchair without permission
Rule of thumb: Think of a person’s mobility aid as part of their body. Would you touch it, take it, or make that comment on it if so? THEN DON’T.
