So I learned my new favorite history fact in my AP US class today. It’s hilarious and goes a bit like this

In 1989, President Bush sent troops to Panama to capture the dictator and drug lord, Manuel Noriega. But Noriega had fled to (I had to look up the full name) the Apostolic Nunciature of the Holy See. The troops couldn’t exactly get in, so they surrounded the place and has to wait him out, or somehow force him out.
And it’s crazy how they did it.
The literal United States Navy SEALs did this
    And it is real history

They blasted rock and roll music for days until he gave up

Apparently, Noriega only liked opera, so this annoyed him.
    But it gets better.
The playlist was not only obnoxiously loud and obnoxiously American, it had a sense of irony.
    Here are some highlights:

    Danger Zone
    Freedom Fighter
    Gonna Tear Your Playhouse Down
    Give It Up
I Fought the Law and the Law Won
If I Had a Rocket Launcher
    Nowhere to Run
    Panama
    Paranoid
    Prisoner of Rock and Roll
    Rock and a Hard Place
    Stay Hungry
They’re Coming to Take Me Away
    This Means War
    Wanted Dead or Alive

And my personal favorite, and a thing that actually happened:
    Never Gonna Give You Up

    I just…
    Imagine the board meeting
“Huh, how are we going to force this guy out of hiding?”
“Oh, I have an idea! Why don’t we blast loud rock music?”
“That just might work! And we should do it with a sense of irony, just to make it funnier!”

PEOPLE ARE SO CONCERNED ABOUT THIS DOGS MASCULINITY

    HES A DOG

no you don’t understand. People freak the fuck out if you don’t enforce human gender roles on dogs. They get fucking belligerent. I work in a pet store and the number of times people have gotten LIVID with me for not just automatically assuming their dog not only required but personally wanted the most stringent enforcement of human gender norms is mindblowing.

People demand dog shampoos that smell “masculine” because “He’s a boy he doesn’t want to smell like flowers” even though he’s a dog and if he had his way he would smell like duck poop. And those shampoos exist! That’s the worst part! There’s enough demand for dog shampoo that smells like Axe body spray that they exist and they sell well.

Or the seemingly nice old lady that shouted “PINK! OBVIOUSLY! SHE’S GIRL SHE HATES OTHER COLORS!” at me when i asked what color harness she wanted for her lapdog. Even though her dog can’t actually see the color pink and does not now and will not ever give a single flying dog fart what color her harness is.

    ^^^^^^^^^

Or, like, when you ask, “Oh, what’s her name?” And they get super indignant and are all like, “Well, HIS name is BRUTUS.” Sorry I didn’t lie down on the ground to examine your dog’s belly to determine if it had a penis. Also, if you’ve gotten Brutus fixed, (or alternately Fifi,) they are sexually neutral. Also also DOGS DON’T HAVE GENDER. Dogs have a sex, but gender as we know it–with colors, styles, names, etc–is all a social construct anyway. Totally exclusive to humans.

My stepmom’s family named their cat Simon because they thought it was a male, but it turns out she’s a girl and guess what? Her name is still Simon, and *gasp* she doesn’t care. All she cares about is if you’re going go scratch her ears and give her chicken.

Like, ok, I get that it’s important to know which sex your animal is (especially when they aren’t fixed yet) because males and females have different health issues, but OH MY GOSH PEOPLE calm down, just pet the dogs and chill out.

The official trailer for Hidden Figures is here!

HIDDEN FIGURES is the incredible untold story of Katherine G. Johnson (Taraji P. Henson), Dorothy Vaughan (Octavia Spencer) and Mary Jackson (Janelle Monáe)—brilliant African-American women working at NASA, who served as the brains behind one of the greatest operations in history: the launch of astronaut John Glenn into orbit, a stunning achievement that restored the nation’s confidence, turned around the Space Race, and galvanized the world. The visionary trio crossed all gender and race lines to inspire generations to dream big.

Yep. I’m crying at work.  These women are the reason I am where I am today.

They’re the reason, that when I told my daddy in 2nd grade that I was going to be an astronaut he didn’t laugh.  He signed me up for space camp and flew with me to Atlanta and drove me to Hunstville so I could attend (sleeping on a friend of a friends couch in Birmingham til the week was over and he could pick me up).  When he heard that the next shuttle launch would be the first time a female commander was in charge, he found a way to make sure we were at the launch of STS-93.  He found a Civil Air Patrol squadron nearby and made sure that they taught me how to fly before I turned 16.  When my highschool didn’t have a computer program past the basics, he went into my school every day for a month to talk to the principal and the computer teacher set up a computer for me in the back next to is so he could teach me Java and C++ in between other classes. That when I applied to the Air Force Academy and MIT (the only two colleges I applied for) his only complaint was that MIT would cost him money, so I better pick the AirForce.  And when I picked MIT over the AirForce he found a way to pay for my tuition.

And that first spring when I got to call him and tell him I wouldn’t be coming home for the summer, I’d be working at NASA’s Johnson Space Center, training Astronauts on the equipment I’d been helping to design at MIT. Well he didn’t say much. He just said, “Good.” and “When we moving you down there?  You’re brother’s in San Antonio.  We’ll fly in there and make him drive us over.” Like it was foretold. Like he knew it was going to happen.

I have over 20 spacecraft in LEO, the astronauts handle work I’ve done on a daily basis on the ISS, and this September my first interplanetary mission is launching because the black women that came first made a place in the space industry for me. And because my father (thanks to his own struggles to find space for a black man in aerospace engineering) didn’t for a second think I wouldn’t do what I told him I was going to do when I was a baby.

I’m gonna be a fucking wreck when I see this movie. And to think, that finally people will know what women like Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan, Mary Jackson, Annie Easley (fixed the Centaur energy equations and formed the basis of all modern rocketry), and Melba Roy (head of the Goddard computers for the first comm satellites) did for the American space industry.  That there’s actually gonna be acknoledgment of the place black women have held at NASA since the very beginning.

Imma be a wreck. And I can’t wait.

    read patrick rothfuss, y’all

You know, at one point I looked around this blog and my character roster and wondered if I needed to balance the gender ratio out a tad. If I had “too many” female characters that I was focusing on.

    I don’t think that anymore.

Patrick Rothfuss is a treasure and I can’t believe I only got into his writing last year.
