People now are like, “Your right to free speech doesn’t mean you can express an offensive opinion”
Like what the fuck does right to free speech mean, then?

A single sperm has 37.5MB of DNA information in it. That means that a normal ejaculation represents a data transfer of 1,587.5TB.

Now that’s a lot of information to swallow

how do I delete other people’s posts

now i’m picturing this as a spray of the equivalent amount of data on floppy discs

    DSDD, SSDD, DSSD or SSSD?

    3?, 3 1/2?,  5 1/4? or 8??

The image in my head was 3 1/2“ SSSD, the 360K ones.

…I think that’s SSDD. There wasn’t a SSSD 3.5" drive. (And very few SSDDs, for that matter – looking it up, SSDD lasted about a year before everybody went DSDD on the drives. Apple had a SSDD for a little while (400K) on the orignal Macs, and there were some PC makers shipping the 360K version you talk about above.

    BUT

Let’s go with that. That’s 4409722222.22 360K 3.5" SSDD floppies. The width is 90mm (and defined as that, despite the name), by 3.3mm tall, allowing – for variation approximately – three floppies per centimetre to be stacked. That makes a stack 14,699,074.074m tall, by .09m wide, or a total of 1,322,916.67m2, or, assuming a single layer of floppies arranged vertically (stacked on end), a square area of roughly 1.150km per side (0.70 miles.)

Conveniently, since Seattle block numbers are indicators of distance 0.05 miles long, we can map this as 14 blocks square. To wit:

I couldn’t entirely remember, so I took a quick look on wikipedia and went with what sounded like what I remembered. The SSDD 400K ones were actually what I was thinking of.

Can I just take a moment to point out how much I love tumblr, you folks, and the internet in general? k :)

Justin Trudeau doesn’t want a cookie for being a male feminist. So maybe the Twitterverse should stop with these reactions.

Surely the best protest sign at a women’s equality demonstration, ever.

First real ride of the season today! (pictured: my beautiful and long suffering ride, a 2001 cannodale T800 that has been my only vehicle since, well, 2001). After a really patchy season last year (too much time on my butt writing), I feared the worst, but it was fantastic. We had beautiful weather the whole time, managed a respectable pace, and I managed 28 miles – and I’m not shot! Not bad for the first ride!

Ha! This post is so old that my garage was still a garage, but this bike is still my ride, and we went out for our second this season today!

Only 18 miles, though. Remodeling put a serious dent in my bike fitness, and my buddy and I both had things to do so had to keep it brief.

So, I work tech support for a very large tech company and I help provide support for desktop and laptop computers that my company makes. Guy calls in, he is having a hard time troubleshooting his mail application. It’s receiving mail but isn’t able to send mail.

This is a pretty common call, sometimes our mail program likes to delete the SMTP password line if anything else changes to help prevent any kind of fraudulent/spam emails from being sent by your computer.

I assure him I’ll be taking care of this problem the best I can and I start to ask a few probing questions when he stops me and asks to speak to a senior advisor.

Me: I know what the source of the problem is most likely and should have this solved in 2-3 minutes, may I ask why you want to speak to a senior advisor?

Customer: This is nothing personal but I just don’t feel that a woman will be able to fix my email problem.

Me: I assure you that I already likely know what the problem is, how to solve it, and it will be quicker than holding 8-10 minutes for a senior advisor. My gender does not prevent me from helping you with your email.

Customer: Just get me to a senior advisor. I am not going to let you help me.

So I asked him to hold for a few while I get in contact with a senior advisor. I called one up and he was male. Explained the situation and got off the phone. Called a second time, got another male. Explained the situation and got off the phone. Called a third time, got a female senior advisor. Explained the situation, she was DELIGHTED to take the call.

    (changing names due to confidentiality)

    I merged the calls.

Me: Hello, Ron? Are you still there?

    Ron: Yes.

Me: Thanks for holding. I’ve got a senior advisor on the line per your request. Her name is Katrina. I’ve caught her up to speed as to the problem with your mail program and she will be further assisting you from here.

Sorry, sexist pig. You aren’t getting your way. You will realize that women have brains, too. Just because my skin is softer and my chest sticks out further than yours does not mean I don’t know how to direct you to fill in the password slot in your SMTP mail settings. Jerk.
