Twitter turns 10 years old today. It’s a big milestone for many reasons, but here’s one you may not hear much about: When it comes the stories told about certain communities, Twitter gave activists a voice and platform so desperately needed. Here is a list of some of the most memorable moments in hashtag activism including #YouOKSis, #TweetLikeaWhiteGay and #ByAnita.

New York’s ultra-rich: Take our money, please

Please take our money! That was the message of some of New York’s wealthiest citizens spelled out in a letter to Gov. Andrew Cuomo. The letter, which specifically advocated a tax increase on the city’s 1%, was obtained by the Associated Press. The letter was reportedly signed by dozens of bold-faced, recognizable names.

Four words: Elizabeth Warren mic drop. (This comes after Trump attacked Warren’s claims of Native American ancestry on Sunday.)

Update: Trump has responded to Warren’s tweetstorm and insulted her in a  similar matter to his Native American quote Sunday.

  • If you’re voting for Bernie Sanders

    marisawhy:

    sweatpants-socks:

    please remember:

not many are aware, but a president is extremely, extremely, extremelyyyy limited without a supporting senate and congress.

for example, if the majority of the party is republican, as it is with Obama, most of the bills and “promises” brought up will be vetoed and denied by the congress without us knowing, thus resulting in us blaming the president when in reality, the president needs OUR help even after being selected.

voting does NOT stop after the presidential election. the president of your choice winning does NOT mean the fight is over.

if you support and want all the things Bernie Sanders is in favor of, and want to see change, please vote for a senate and congress that will support and pass these ideas as well.

so if you’re “feeling the Bern”, don’t be upset if you dont get free college tuition. so please, please, please, PLEASE… vote for a respectful, progressive, open minded senate & congress (:

Do not skip out on midterm elections. Do NOT skip out on midterms. DO NOT SKIP OUT ON MIDTERMS FOR THE LOVE OF GOD

You know how in action movies the main guy is always like “Yeah I’ve got a contact here in Uzbekistan that owes me a favor” for no discernible reason but it occurred to me that like that’s basically what internet friends are like if I was in that situation I’d be like “Yeah don’t worry leave it to me. I’ve got a mutual in the Netherlands whose selfie I reblogged one time.”

#If you ever come to Chile looking for a member of an evil organization #And you need someone to help you kill them and hide the body #Holla @ me just sayin’ #No but seriously now I’m thinking about an actual action movie #In which the hero is like ‘don’t worry I have a contact there. I follow them on twitter’ #‘we talked about our mutual love of nutella one’ #‘and they said I looked cute in my selfie’ #‘they’re legit. I know they can be trusted’ #Everything said with a super serious action movie hero voice #And said to the leader of whatever thing the hero works for #Who is a super serious person who wears suits and frowns a lot #My imagination went funny places

    (Fefy’s tags)

No but seriously though.  You know that trope where there’s some ordinary dude who gets pulled into a web of intrigue by some badass sexy lady and then ends up being even better at stuff than the lady?  Imagine that reversed.  Imagine some English Lit grad student with a huge fandom tumblr accidentally witnesses a crime and some badass spy dude shows up and is like “your life is in danger, you have to come with me, and now that you’re involved you might as well help us track down the bad guys” and it’s funny because she’s not at all an action type but then he’s like “well it looks like the bad guys are doing something devious in New Zealand, better set up camp in an abandoned mine shaft” and she’s all “No wait, I totally know someone there who always tags me in reblogs about my obscure OTPs, she would 1000% let us use her place, look I already fanmailed her” and then later he’s like “Oh, we found the bad guy camp in rural Sweden but there’s no time for backup to arrive from our base before their evil plan goes down!” and she’s like “Oh hold up, did you say Sweden, because I defs know someone from there and they always leave super supportive replies on my personal posts and they will definitely have my back, give me a sec to send them an ask” and the dude is like “HOW DO YOU HAVE A BETTER INTERNATIONAL NETWORK OF ALLIES THAN ME”

I’ve got a closet I could stuff you in in Canada.

    I would watch this movie.

This is day 80/365 of 2016 and Dr. Denise Cloyd is the 8th queer woman to die on primetime this year. A queer woman has died on our screens every 10 days in 2016.

According to GLAAD’s 2015 report of “Where We Are On TV” of the 881 regular characters expected
    to appear on broadcast primetime
programming this year, 4% were identified as gay, lesbian, or
bisexual. There were 23 lesbian characters, 33 gay characters, 12 bisexual females, and 2 bisexual males.

In 2015 there were only 35 fictional wlw characters on television and 80 days into 2016 they’ve killed 10 of them.

    That is almost a third.

In less than 3 full months of the year.

    Let that sink in.

HEY. PEOPLE WHO ARE BINDING YOUR CHESTS, LISTEN UP FOR LIKE FIFTEEN SECONDS.

THIS IS WHAT CAN POTENTIALLY HAPPEN IF YOU IMPROPERLY BIND WHEN YOU ARE YOUNG, OR PROBABLY IF YOU DO IT LONGTERM EVER.

    DO NOT DO THIS.

when i was a wee transchild of fourteen, recently out and generally clueless, i didn’t know that there were real binders to use. so, like many young trans dudes, i used a 6" ace bandage – and it worked, for what i wanted. it was hot and uncomfortable and squeezy, but my chest was flat, so i didn’t care.

then, a year or so later, i found out about real binders, but they were expensive. at 14, with no income, despite my parents support… i couldn’t justify asking for a 30 dollar binder, so i didn’t. it wasn’t til a trip to a waterpark that i finally got my first real binder and stopped using the ace bandage.

    that was ten years ago.

my ribs are permanently deformed and you can see the exact curve of the bottom line of my makeshift binder, to this day. me and Weird Rib, destined to be together forever.

please please please PLEASE do not bind with ace bandages. use sports tape on both sides and not wrapped around your chest. use sports bras. layer. buy a real binder – underworks is where i get mine and i hope other people who bind can reblog and add links and resources because i currently can’t! i know firsthand the desperation that comes with gender dysphoria and i understand the need to bind. i really, truly do – it is a core part of my presentation and i do not leave the house without binding, and i’m sure it’s similar for many of you.

but please, do it SAFELY. you will regret it if you don’t.

Reblogging for those who need it

English must be difficult to learn. I’m sure it can be taught through tough, thorough thought though.
