Casual reminder: Bernie has lost 16 states to Clinton. Obama lost 21 to Clinton including Florida and Ohio. Bernie is also projected to do pretty well in the next two primaries. Please keep the faith and please keep voting! We failed him today big time, but he still has a chance. Please get out there and vote, because if we give up on him now we will really be failing him. Be loud, be proud, and speak up!
Don’t think of it as us failing him. Tuesday was the last big bunch of Primaries where Clinton has a major advantage in the polls. We’ll pick up from here.

Why Tony Todd is awesome.
Lemme tell you a story about Tony Todd.
You know him. Yeah, you do.

This fly mofo has been in everything. Like, seriously. He’s been in some major Hollywood movies (Platoon, for example, The Rock and all the Final Destination movies) but is probably most famous for playing the Candyman, and starring in about a million B-horror movies. His list of TV credits reads like a comprehensive list of genre and procedurals. Your favorite show? He was probably in it. He’s just been cast in a recurring role in “The Flash.”
But among geeks, he is probably most famous for his recurring role in both TNG and DS9 as Kurn, Worf’s brother.

Kurn was a fantastic character with a developed arc over many seasons (which ended horribly but we won’t go there). Todd also guest starred in DS9 (sans Klingon makeup) as an older Jake Sisko
Also he has a voice like deepest smoothest melted chocolate.
Tony was a guest at Shore Leave, a fan-run mostly-Trek convention I attended many years ago in Towson. He was a great panelist, funny and honest.
Now, Klingon cosplayers are always a big deal at Trek conventions. They do not fuck around. Their outfits could walk right onto a set and be filmed. Shore Leave always featured a whole contingent of Klingons. They’d run a Klingon Jail – you could pay to have your buddy kidnapped by Klingons and put in jail, and they’d have to raise money to make bail, and then all the proceeds went to charity.
Most Klingon cosplayers I knew weren’t that into Worf. He was just too…Starfleet. So when Kurn came along (and before Martok, the ultimate Klingon character of Trek), he was sort of the standard-bearer. He had been raised Klingon (unlike Worf, who was raised by humans) and was the very image of an honorable Klingon warrior. So you can imagine the excitement when Todd was a guest.
After the panel, we all left the hall, and there in the lobby was a big group of Klingons, standing in formation, in all their costumed glory, waiting to greet Tony. We all stood around to see.
He walked out and saw them. He didn’t greet them. He didn’t smile. He didn’t say hi.
No. Without missing a beat, he strutted up to them, and started…dressing them down.
Suddenly, he WAS Kurn. No makeup, but it was like Kurn was there. Walking up and down the ranks, calling them maggots, criticizing their attention, their bearing. Asking why none of them had bruises. Were they not fighting? Was their bat’leth practice falling behind? Where was the blood? And WHY WAS NOBODY DRUNK. He really tore into them, a little twinkle in his eyes.
The Klingons stood there, responding with SIR YES SIR when he addressed them, quivering with joy.
It was so awesome.
This is everything.

The most progressive tastemaker in the fashion world just might be 17-year-old Jaden Smith. Smith’s latest gig is the cover of GQ UK, and in the cover story he drops yet more wisdom on the gender fluidity that is becoming our norm.

it’s 15 days into march how last minute do you think this was
Gotta be honest I genuinely think it took staff 15 days to figure out how to code it
my theory is they waited until now so it would look like waiting two weeks to put up a black history month thing last month was on purpose
It’s very simple, clearly tumblr runs in its own timezone, just two weeks behind ours.

Started watching Voyager for the first time while I catch up with Distant Worlds
Singularities do not work that way, do not do not do not. not even if you add ‘quantum’ to the end.
Fun to watch though :).
I think you’ll find that if you change it to “super hyper quantum singularity (with nuts)” then it works fine.

Vantablack absorbs so much light that it can fool the eye into seeing a smooth surface on a crumpled sheet of aluminum foil. So on the back you can see that it’s actually crumpled. Isn’t that cool?
I want a shirt made of this stuff
Seriously, when is this stuff gonna become commercially available. I said I was only wearing black until they came up with something darker, and I gotta live up to that.
The best part about this is if you wear clothes with this zero-albedo ‘color’ (or lack thereof), but also happen to own a cat, you’ll become known as the disembodied cloud of floating cat hair.
Now I need to know how well black cat hair shows up on this stuff.
If I get one, I’ll let you know :3

More tidbits I’ve found while researching
- tumblr has a sad-boner for the burning of the library of alexandria
- which was not actually one burning but several
- and while the Library of Alexandria was an immense historical and national treasure, a lot of ppl tend to forget about the other book and library burnings that occurred in antiquity
- Places like the library of Nalanda, in India, which contained an elaborate classification system to hold what was then seen as the largest collection of Buddhist literature
- and the House of Wisdom in Baghdad, which contained Greek and Arabic works on mathematics and astronomy to zoology and cartography
- and more recently, the Institut für Sexualwissenschaft (no, that does not mean sexual witchcraft) which was burned by the Nazis b/c the majority of tomes dealt with same sex relationships and gay rights and acceptance.
- and omg, this makes me so mad. The Libraries of Fisheries and Oceans in Canada has all its collection thrown away in an attempt to save taxpayer money and on the hope that all of its material was digitized. Only 5 to 6% was.
- and the Saeh library in Lebanon, which was burnt b/c of terrorism.
- Book burnings are happening right now, y’all.
Not to mention how the Spanish systematically destroyed the entire literary output of whole societies in Mesoamerica, to the point where we only have a handful of their codices today
We should talk, too, about the heroism of those trying to save books from violence, not least because the deliberate destruction of cultural artifacts is evidence of genocide. A few libraries not mentioned above:
- The National Library of Bosnia, located in Sarajevo, which was destroyed in August of 1992 by Serb forces. It was targeted with incendiary shells, and over a million books testifying to Bosnia’s multicultural history were lost in the resulting fire. Aida Buturovi?, a young librarian, was killed by sniper fire while trying to carry books from the burning building. The Oriental Institute, housing the majority of Sarajevo’s Islamic manuscripts, was destroyed that May, but it wasn’t the first library burnt in Sarajevo: during World War II, the Nazis decimated the collection of La Benevolencija, one of the oldest Jewish organizations in the city.
- The Ahmed Baba Institute in Timbuktu, which was burned in January 2013 by Tuareg rebel forces fleeing the city, who had been using the library as a barracks. The fire destroyed 4,000 manuscripts – but Abdel Kader Haïdara, a librarian, saved 400,000 more from libraries all over the city by smuggling them out in the preceding months. He had help, and the ‘book rustlers’ of Mali – who risked their lives to do it – saved 800 years of West African history.
And let us not forget Alia Muhammad Baker, the head librarian of Al Basrah Central Library, who risked her life to save the books when no one else in the Iraqi government gave a damn. By the time the invading US and UK forces had blown the building, she and her book-smuggling-food-service-cadre had taken almost ¾ of the books over the seven foot perimeter fence and into a nearby restaurant. Except, of course, for the books about Saddam Hussein. Those, they left.
“In the Koran, the first thing God said to Muhammad was ‘Read,’ ” she said.
:(
Not to mention how the Spanish systematically destroyed the entire
literary output of whole societies in Mesoamerica, to the point where we
only have a handful of their codices todayAnd for at least a few of them, there isn’t really enough left to even make much of an an attempt at figuring out the full scope of the writing system.
