Justin Trudeau doesn’t want a cookie for being a male feminist. So maybe the Twitterverse should stop with these reactions.

Surely the best protest sign at a women’s equality demonstration, ever.

First real ride of the season today! (pictured: my beautiful and long suffering ride, a 2001 cannodale T800 that has been my only vehicle since, well, 2001). After a really patchy season last year (too much time on my butt writing), I feared the worst, but it was fantastic. We had beautiful weather the whole time, managed a respectable pace, and I managed 28 miles – and I’m not shot! Not bad for the first ride!

Ha! This post is so old that my garage was still a garage, but this bike is still my ride, and we went out for our second this season today!

Only 18 miles, though. Remodeling put a serious dent in my bike fitness, and my buddy and I both had things to do so had to keep it brief.

So, I work tech support for a very large tech company and I help provide support for desktop and laptop computers that my company makes. Guy calls in, he is having a hard time troubleshooting his mail application. It’s receiving mail but isn’t able to send mail.

This is a pretty common call, sometimes our mail program likes to delete the SMTP password line if anything else changes to help prevent any kind of fraudulent/spam emails from being sent by your computer.

I assure him I’ll be taking care of this problem the best I can and I start to ask a few probing questions when he stops me and asks to speak to a senior advisor.

Me: I know what the source of the problem is most likely and should have this solved in 2-3 minutes, may I ask why you want to speak to a senior advisor?

Customer: This is nothing personal but I just don’t feel that a woman will be able to fix my email problem.

Me: I assure you that I already likely know what the problem is, how to solve it, and it will be quicker than holding 8-10 minutes for a senior advisor. My gender does not prevent me from helping you with your email.

Customer: Just get me to a senior advisor. I am not going to let you help me.

So I asked him to hold for a few while I get in contact with a senior advisor. I called one up and he was male. Explained the situation and got off the phone. Called a second time, got another male. Explained the situation and got off the phone. Called a third time, got a female senior advisor. Explained the situation, she was DELIGHTED to take the call.

    (changing names due to confidentiality)

    I merged the calls.

Me: Hello, Ron? Are you still there?

    Ron: Yes.

Me: Thanks for holding. I’ve got a senior advisor on the line per your request. Her name is Katrina. I’ve caught her up to speed as to the problem with your mail program and she will be further assisting you from here.

Sorry, sexist pig. You aren’t getting your way. You will realize that women have brains, too. Just because my skin is softer and my chest sticks out further than yours does not mean I don’t know how to direct you to fill in the password slot in your SMTP mail settings. Jerk.

Emily Temple-Wood, a biology major at Loyola University, started WikiProject Women Scientists in 2012 in an attempt to combat the sweeping underrepresentation of women in the annals of scientific discovery.

The trolls soon descended, but instead of retaliating in kind, Temple-Wood and the followers she’s acquired write a biography on a woman who’s made a valuable contribution to science for every hateful message she receives. It turns out, her efforts are desperately needed.

  • Sent Home From Middle School After Reporting A Rape

    buzzfeed:

    blackmattersus:

This story contains a description of sexual assault.

Over spring break in April 2015, 13-year-old G. stopped eating and sleeping. She started having panic attacks and complained of excruciating pain. When G.’s friends and mother asked what was wrong, G. refused to tell them. Then, later that month, the video started to spread.

A boy in G.’s eighth-grade class at Spring Creek Community School, a public middle school in Brooklyn, had filmed himself penetrating G.’s mouth and anus. G. said she had been raped. The boy claimed the sex was consensual. To G.’s horror, the video he secretly filmed of her was shared all over Brooklyn.

“It was the most awful thing,” said G., who is identified by her middle initial to protect her privacy. “It was bad enough that everyone knew what happened. But knowing that they had seen the video was that much worse.”

No school principal wants to deal with such a catastrophe. But under the federal gender equity law Title IX, schools that receive federal funding have to thoroughly investigate all claims of sexual harassment and assault. Above all, schools must ensure that students aren’t denied their right to an education on the basis of sex.

When G. reported her rape, Spring Creek’s response denied her that very right, according to a federal complaint G.’s attorney filed against the New York City Department of Education in November 2015.

“Everyone was blaming things on me,” G. said. “It was so much pressure. I couldn’t take it. At times I felt like giving up on my life.”

Two weeks after her assault, G.’s friends helped her tell a school staff member what had happened, according to the complaint. He asked her if the sex was consensual, but when she said it wasn’t, he did not report it to other administrators or police, despite state mandatory reporting laws.

Later that month, G. reported the rape and the video to the principal. The principal called the police and G.’s mother, then told G. to leave school while they got the situation under control. Her presence would just “make things worse,” the principal said, according to the complaint.
