Catholic school won’t let student bring a same-sex date to homecoming
At a Catholic high school in Memphis, Tennessee, an 18-year-old has been told he can’t bring a same-sex date to homecoming – and the school has basically created a new policy to stop him.
Lance Sanderson is a well-known student at Christian Brothers High School, both for being the school’s unofficial sports photographer and for being openly gay (and frequently targeted because of it). Last year, he spoke to an administrator about bringing a same-sex date to homecoming, and the administrator was on board.
But that person no longer works at the school, and when Sanderson brought it up to someone else this year, he was shut down.
Sanderson said when he pushed the issue, school officials told him he could no longer photograph sporting events. The school “wanted me to tell people I had to take a break for a while for personal reasons,” he told Mic. In the meantime, the school put together a committee to look into the matter and come up with something akin to an official policy that would resolve the issue. That new policy was released this week in a bulletin and specified girls from other schools could attend homecoming, but “boys from other schools may not attend.“
The bulletin, Sanderson said, is read each morning on the school’s public address system.
How’s that for deliberately singling out a gay student with your virulent homophobia and repeating it publicly every single day? Ugh.
always finding new ways.
