Just before I start

So, I need to ring and find out about the DAF’s cylinders, but before I start I just need to say something about final episode of the L word.

WHAT THE FUCK!? (with spoilers)

I’m sorry, I loved the L word. Yes, there was very poor representation of what lesbians, in my experience, look like. Yes, it was a shiny, shiny, unrealistic show and the whole thing had characters carefully crafted to create as much drama as possible. Yes, Jenny was as sociopath who’s behaviour was unreal to the point of being difficult to actually believe. Each season wasn’t quite as good as the previous one, it seemed. But for the most part it was good TV, and frankly it was nice to see Lesbians on screen. There’s really attrocious representation of LGBT people on TV, and finally getting a show based around lesbians was too good to miss.

I wanted an ending that at least wrapped up some loose ends, that left us with some sense of closure, it’s not like it’s going to be back*; I didn’t want a happy clappy everyone walks off into a fairy tale, but instead they gave us a deliberately screwed up ending where everyone’s unhappy and contrived** to give us an ending where everyone has a motive to kill Jenny, then don’t tell us who did.

Thanks so much. It’s not like the vast majority of lesbian orientated writing and drama extant already does the Lesbians will die miserable and alone theme***, or the lesbians can’t keep it in their pants theme. We didn’t really need more of that. We’ve had 6 seasons of you making them miserable, couldn’t you just have left Bette and Tina alone?

*Sighs*

If they do a follow up spin off, I’m so unimpressed that I do wonder if I’d watch it, apart from the ‘closure’ aspect of it, but then so many of my shows have failed to deliver closure ‘cos they’ve been unexpectedly canned. They had the chance to do something clever, interesting, funny, and provide some degree of closure for the show’s many fans, instead they did this. It’s disappointing.

Let’s see if the end of BSG can annoy me as much… at least iirc they’ve got a special to follow up with.

* Yes, online episodes segueing in to a spin-off season, potentially featuring Alice in prison – so presumably Alice did, in fact, kill Jenny. Despite the fact that her character seems one of the least likely to actually do such a thing. Although, potentially, she’s been very defensive of Shane in the past and hearing that Jenny had screwed Shane over so much? Still seems even more far-fetched than is reasonable.
** Really contrived. No, seriously. Really really contrived.
*** Hrm, look, the only ‘happy couple’ at the end is Kit and Sunset, a straight relationship (he is a drag queen, for those who don’t watch the show but have made it this far through my annoyance).

KateWE

Kate's a human mostly built out of spite and overcoming transphobia-racism-and-other-bullshit. Although increasingly right-wing bigots would say otherwise. So she's either a human or a lizard in disguise sent to destroy all of humanity. Either way, it's all good.
